Principal Diagnosis is the condition, after study, which occasioned the admission. It is the definitive diagnosis or if not, the most probable diagnosis, after all the resources available have been exhausted in its investigation (“after study”). It is what necessitated the admission to acute care, that could not have been managed in any other setting (home or outpatient), and was the focus of medical management and utilization of hospital resources. #acute care #diagnosis #admission #medical necessity
